Complete and Utter Randomness

First off, thanks going out to Amy for putting together the blog crawl! Met lots of nifty folks, and I think it has given me a kick in the pants as far as keeping my blog updated.

Anyhoooo.... randomness!

This little guy is cute, but he needs to go away. Bird seed is expensive, and he throws 3/4's of it on the ground as he rummages around, filling those little cheek pouches up. Plus, the birds aren't that happy with him, as you can see.

Per request from my friend Carol, one of several of my Old Skool Boyfriends. I need to start scanning them.

A gift from a friend, several years ago. I forget their names now, but they were quite famous in their time. And now it's going to bug me, trying to remember.

Cat in a box. I was going to throw the box away, but now I can't bring myself to do so, as both cats love it so much. When one is already in there, the other will walk up, and look at the one inside with great disdain.

Another But is it Art WIP... "Urban Legends." I need to break out the sewing machine soon so I can start moving these on to their next phase.

Meet Randall, who came to live with me in Tennessee. He was made with a lot of love and weirdness by Sharon Dorsey. You can check out more of her weirdness over at her blog.
I love him, though some in our household find him a little creepy, apparently.

Okay, if you read, you need to read this book. Seriously. Especially if you were That Weird Kid in school. It's categorized as "young adult/fantasy" but it's so much more than that. It was sent to me as a birthday gift from a friend last week, and I picked it up one night with the intent of just getting a taste of it... and ended up having to set it down hours later so I could get some sleep. (Coincidentally, it just won the Nebula Award for Best Novel on sunday)

"Startling, unusual, and yet irresistably readable, Among Others is at once the compelling story of a young woman struggling to escape a troubled childhood, a brilliant diary of first encounters with the great novels of modern fantasy and SF, and a spellbinding tale of escape from ancient enchantment.

Raised by a half-mad mother who dabbled in magic, Morwenna Phelps found refuge in two worlds. As a child growing up in Wales, she played among the spirits who made their homes in industrial ruins. But her mind found freedom and promise in the science fiction novels that were her closest companions. Then her mother tried to bend the spirits to dark ends, and Mori was forced to confront her in a magical battle that left her crippled--and her twin sister dead."

All righty, that's all the randomness for now! Hope everyone's week is off to a good start!

  1. Bones, cats, artsy urban legends and a review of a book I love--what a jam!

I've read Among Others twice--I tend to reread books I really enjoy. I was enchanted by the combination of real life struggles, faery magic, and the main character's love of science fiction novels. Her passion for reading left me smiling nearly as much as the cruelty of some characters left me wanting to smack them on the back of the head.

    1. I thought it may be one you'd enjoy!
I'm only about 1/2-way through it, because I keep finding myself drifting off, thinking about whichever book she's talking about at any given point.(or making notes of books I need to read)

  2. You are awesome! I LOVELOVELOVE reading your blog! I think we might be twins separated at birth except for the part where you're 4 years younger.

OMG! I totally will read that book! And as far as young adult fiction goes, that's been one of the few perks of having teens - getting some good tips on reading material. One that I've read recently that you might like (also being a child of the 80's) is Ready Player One (if you haven't already read it). It's a young adult-ish sci-fi book that is also IMPOSSIBLE to put down. I went through withdrawal when I finished it.

    1. Older sister separated after birth, then?
Definitely check it out. I'm loving it! It just so happens that Goodreads is having a give-away for Ready Player One next week, so cross your fingers for me!

  3. I love Randall's wee red arms. I once knew a three year old whose first language was not english. he would burst into howling laughter every time he heard the word puppet. we don't know why, but I think of him whenever I see a good puppet. the goddamn chipmunks have lost all their charm for me after moving into the insulation in my garage last winter. I believe they are finally gone, but man oh man is chipmunk pee stinky. and there is an empty cardboard box on my dining room floor right now for the very same reason.

    1. I may have jinxed the chipmunk. I don't know if you saw my FB post this morning, but the lovely cat got out of his box long enough to kill one and drag it upstairs to the bedroom to play with it about 5am.

  4. Cats choose the most comfortable or most inconvenient place as their own. Mine loves to lay right on the stairs or in big plastic shopping bags...
Seeing a sleeping feline is always a treat, though....especially when they are as cute as yours :)

I'm getting ready for a Summer trip and compiling a list of must reads....this book sounds like it fits the bill.

    1. Yeah, he likes to lie right in the middle of the stairs as well, which is somewhat worrisome!

Check it out! It's rapidly becoming one of my new favorites, for it's meta-ness.
